Stereoscopic Microscope - An Easy But Rewarding Science Project Idea

Do you remember those science fairs way back during the early years of your education, when students scampered for the best science project idea they can find? Chances are, the internet was still a fantasy back then, and all we had were old, dusty books in the library. On of the most popular science fair projects is the building of stereoscopic microscope. And today, even with the advent of the World Wide Web and other life-changing technological breakthroughs, a stereoscopic microscope still remains as a venerable science fair project, owing to the timeless nature of the design and the wonders that can be provided by the work.

Basically, a stereoscopic microscope is one of two main types of microscopes, the other being the compound microscope. Whereas the latter uses only one field of vision through one eye, the latter uses both eyes for a more concrete view of the specimen. Indeed, microscopes of the stereoscopic variety can give a three dimensional view of the specimen, whereas the compound microscope can only provide a flat view of the object's surface. It is for this reason that more people, in the profession field and in the academe, actually prefer microscopes of the stereoscopic variety when it comes to observations involving solid objects possessing three dimensional shapes.

Indeed, a stereoscopic microscope, though it may sound like a complicated beast, can easily be fabricated. Elementary students from all over the world have decided to adopt this work as their science fair project, a testament to how easy it is to create one through your bare hands. Though such a creation may not possess the power expected from commercial releases, the sense of fulfillment that can be gained from building your own microscope of this nature is often beyond compare. All you need, really, is an 8 x 30 binocular, some prisms, and some lenses to manipulate the light source and condense the same for the desired magnification. All of these materials, believe it or not, can be purchased for less than $25.

Perhaps you already have a kid of your own by now, and he's about to embark on some science fairs. In the event that he's looking for a great project that's relatively easy to accomplish but is very rewarding nonetheless, and a project that will not add any burden to your budget, then creating a microscope of the stereoscopic variety is highly recommended.
